The company’s 2002 hit, the Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, spawned a mod called Better Bodies, which sought “to make a body mod that a modder could easily make clothing for, and that also looked more realistic than the models that come with the game.” It also added character models with genitalia. The utility of these mods is, in a vacuum, not entirely scopophilic.īody-modding in Bethesda games started off innocent enough. It should also be noted that because these are role-playing games, players can assume the role of a female character and alter their own appearance. They are in no way endorsed or monitored by the game’s creators. Here is where I state the obvious: These mods are created by users and distributed via third-party sites like Nexus Mods. There are male-centric and gender-neutral additions as well, but they appear with noticeably less frequency.
“Simple clean face for woman” is just the latest in a long lineage of mods designed to alter the female characters in Bethesda games.

Take, for instance, “ Simple clean face for woman ,” a mod whose sole purpose is to remove dirt smudges and skin texture from only the game’s female characters, leaving them with an inhuman, artificial smoothness. And that’s when some of the mods get … weirder. In both cases, the characters in these games are generally hard-scrabble and grimy. I’m personally bewildered, and creeped out, by the clean mods.īethesda’s two major RPG franchises are the Elder Scrolls (medieval fantasy) and Fallout (nuclear post-apocalypse). Last week, a mod for the Boston-set Fallout 4 earned the ire of Major League Baseball because it featured David Ortiz and Red Sox paraphernalia. Given that Fallout 4 is only a week old, many of these mods are simple cosmetic upgrades - higher-quality 3-D models and textures, color swaps, a Taylor Swift background for the playable character’s wearable computer. Mods are popular enough to sustain substantial online communities, and when it comes to modding communities, there are few that can rival the one for Bethesda games. Mods (short for “modification”) allow players to tweak the game, from things as minor as interface tweaks to more substantial additions like new characters and locales. While some play on console systems like the Xbox and PlayStation, many are playing it on PC, because that version offers mod support. You may already own it: Bethesda Softworks, the game’s publisher, announced that they had shipped 12 million units of the game “representing sales in excess of $750 million” (shipping, it should be noted, is a different metric from sold). You may already know this, since the game has been the subject of a pretty heavy media blitz before launch. Also many mod authors BEG you to use the mod manager for install.Fallout 4, the newest blockbuster role-playing video game, came out last week. Also have fun locating all your files when you want to uninstall a mod to troubleshoot as this post points out! With NMM it's a simple case of easy categories you can set yourself if you want, click uninstall and done, while your genious self is busy hunting through a folder not sure the cryptic name of said mod. Yes, it's easy to drag and drop but NMM saves at least two steps per mod when downloading, in my case that's almost 50 mods.

Using NMM is a GUI, ya know something we've been using since the Amiga? Atari ST? Mac classic? FFS don't sound like such a smug douche. Its drag and drop for crying out loud and you guys are pushing mod managers, its a freaking comedy.

Originally posted by Flippy:A 5 yo could manually install mods and not have any trouble with missing textures or any of the other problems you guys using mod managers have. and there are no errors., I completely deleted ALL my mods, not just disabled them, and re-downloaded them from Nexus manually. So far, I have been using Loot but it doesn't change my load order: ever. OR IF YOU'VE REINSTALLED THE GAME, start with a vanilla game and then install your mods 1 or 2 at a time until the trouble comes back. A simple disable doesn't work all the time.ĥ. UNINSTALL your mods 1 or 2 at a time to see if the problem goes away.

Visit the authors' mod pages and make sure you haven't missed anything like an UPDATE or PATCH, for exampleĢ. You're gonna have to do some good, old-fashioned troubleshooting to find what mod(s) aren't playing nice with each other.
